| In celebration of its 20th anniversary, the Science Education Institute of the Department of Science and Technology recently published a coffee table book entitled, "Scholars 20: DOST-SEI celebrates 20 years of scholarships". The book features twenty success stories of young people, who are recipients of various S&T scholarship grants of DOST-SEI. Through the inspiring stories of the scholar-graduates, the SEI wishes to impart the importance of the human resource development program in developing quality S&T manpower. It also highlights some of the important qualities like diligence, initiative, discipline and motivation for an individual to succeed in any field of endeavor. |
The Science Education Institute is the government agency responsible for increasing the number and improving the quality of the country's pool of S&T human resources through its various scholarship programs. Through the implementation of S&T undergraduate and graduate scholarships, it has produced leaders in the government, private sectors and the academe. The SEI is also an active player in improving the state of basic science education in the country through its capacity-building programs for teacher education institutions and facilitating science learning through the development of alternative delivery systems and resources.
With the bulk of support coming from the national government, the Institute currently administers the following scholarships:

Every year, there are about 10,000 scholars (from first year to fourth year) supported by this type of scholarship, coming from various congressional districts and municipalities all over the country.
B. DOST-SEI Merit Scholarship Program (Program B)
The DOST-SEI Merit Scholarship program offers scholarship to students who belong to families whose annual income exceeds the poverty line set by NEDA. The program is designed to identify youths with very high aptitude in science and mathematics and provide them opportunity |
to pursue specialized careers in science and technology.
It also aims to ensure a steady supply of competently trained S&T human resource who may serve as the country's future S&T leaders.
C. Junior Level Assistance Program - While Program A & B address the needs of incoming college freshmen, the Junior Level Assistance Program offers assistance to qualified incoming third year college students who desire to continue and pursue scholarship in engineering, |

E. SEI Faculty Development Program for Teacher Education Institutions, on the other hand, is a Ph.D, Science Education scholarship program for science and mathematics faculty of selected teacher education institutions (TEIs) offered in two schemes: residential and distance education mode. To accelerate HRD in science education, a consortium of 4 universities in Visayas and Mindanao is being formed to offer PhD Science Education.
F. Grant for Educational Assistance on Science Teaching and Technology Courses in Mindanao or GREAT-M was launched in 2003 to address the disparities between provinces and ethnic groups in terms of access to opportunities and quality S&T education. Under this program, qualifiers undergo a bridging program for seven months before being integrated into the university's mainstream.
