Building in Research & Manpower Assessment
Assessment of Scientific and
Technological Manpower Resources
Current and future supply and demand of S&T manpower
resources are assessed based on surveys conducted in
the public and private sectors and statistical studies
undertaken in cooperation with other government agencies
such as the National Statistics Office (NSO), the Department
of Labor and Employment (DOLE) and the National Economic
Development Authority (NEDA). These studies aim to come
up with documented bases for determining the priorities
of S&T education relevant to the S&T manpower
needs in the industry, academe and government sectors.

Development of Databases Relevant
to S&T and Science Education
Facilities and capabilities for a well-planned and
structured database maintenance are ensured through
the cooperating node institutions which are provided
with financial and technical assistance by the Institute.
The project seeks to make available to planners and
decision-makers in the S&T sector accurate and reliable
system of organizing and utilizing available database
in science education.
Research Activities for Manpower
Development and Planning
Projects to continuously upgrade the research capabilities
of science and mathematics teachers are undertaken.
Grants are provided to teacher-proponents who develop
successful modules and/or instructional materials to
improve the learning of science and mathematics in schools.
The results of the research projects are documented,
published and distributed as ready reference materials
for teachers.
Science and Technology Education
Network (STEdNet)
The Science and Technology Education Network or STEdNet
has been established to provide the infrastructure needed
to maintain not only the Philippine Database in Science
Education but to ensure a smooth exchange of information
and experiences among identified institutions in the
academe and the government through an electronic network.

Benchmarking for the Improvement
of S&T Education
Benchmarking is a continuing and systematic process
which is used to measure and evaluate current practices
and performance in S&T education among cooperating
schools and learning institutions. Strategies are developed
by the Institute to identify best practices among schools
and incorporate such practices in schools needing improvement
in specific teaching and learning areas.
Philippine Participation in the
Third International Mathematics and Science Study-Repeat
(TIMSS-R)
The performance of Filipino students in the Third International
Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) in 1995 is compared
to the performance of the equivalent population group
in the TIMSS-R through a similar test given to students
in 150 public and private schools in early 1999. The
results of this study will enable the country to gauge
the effectiveness of the intervention program being
implemented and to gather data as bases for the continuous
improvement of student performance in science and mathematics.
