The Department of Science and Technology on Friday gave recognition to 257 elementary and high school students who won in various international science and mathematics competitions.
The students received the Youth Excellence in Science (YES) Award, a medal of distinction given by the DOST, which signifies its high regard for excellence and competitiveness through the distinguished achievements of young Filipinos in international science and mathematics competitions.
One of 2011’s bronze medalists in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) topped this year’s Philippine Mathematical Olympiad (PMO).
Henry Jefferson Morco of Chiang Kai Shek College won First Place, taking home P15,000 while his coach, Frederick Buiza, got P5,000. Morco won last year’s bronze in the IMO together with Carmela Antoinette Lao and Vance Eldric Go of Saint Jude Catholic School. The Philippines’ medal haul last year was the country’s largest ever since it joined the hardest mathematics competition in the world.
The search for the big names in the field of science education goes on as the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) extends the deadline for nominations for the 3rd Award for Leadership and Innovation for Development Relevant to Science Education or Gawad LIDER to February 15.
DOST-SEI Director Dr. Filma G. Brawner said the extension was done to provide ample time for more nominations to come in.
Around 700 elementary students and teachers from five municipalities of the Mountain Province got a taste of fun and exciting science experience while watching science films as the Science Education Institute’s (SEI) Science Explorer brought the Science Film Festival to the Cordilleras last week.
The Science Explorer, the Philippines’ first and only mobile science learning facility, brought to students and teachers of Bauko, Sabangan, Bontoc, Sagada and Besao a brand new experience in science and technology through interactive science activities coupled with international films to excite the pupils on the wonders of science.
