“Stay and serve.”
It is the simplest yet most striking message that successful scholar-graduates of the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) instilled among 100 ongoing scholars in a day dedicated to honor them
Effective science education occurs even in jam-packed rooms, as attested by the winners and finalists in the recently-concluded national search for the most innovative practices in teaching large and extra-large classes.
Using creative strategies such as "sizing interventions" and "flock management", two schools from Zamboanga and Laguna bested four other finalists from Metro Manila to earn the distinction of having the best and most inventive teaching strategies in their large science and mathematics classes.
Champions of science education have received righteous recognition of their many contributions in the field during the 3rd Gawad Leadership and Innovations for Development Relevant to Science Education (Gawad LIDER) Awarding Ceremony.
Conferred with the Exemplary Leadership Awards were Dr. Luis Rey I. Velasco, renowned entomologist and former Chancellor of the University of the Philippines - Los Banos (UPLB) for the Individual category, and ABS-CBN Foundation, Inc. (AFI) E-Media Group, the foundation's education arm, for the Institution category.
And so the winning streak lives on.
Kenneth Co of Philippine Science High School - Diliman and Mikaela Angeline Uy of Saint Jude Catholic School scored 14 points apiece to carry on the country's streak of garnering at least the bronze medal in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) since 2008.
