Young Filipino mathematical talents were awarded as
among the world's best in mathematics as they claim
victory for the most coveted Westpac medals for this
year's Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). Daryl
Jonathan Lee, a sophomore student of Grace Christian
High School and Jose Ramon Batiller, a senior student
of Philippine Science High School were awarded with
the grand prize in a fitting ceremony held on October
23, 2003 at the Department of Science and Technology
(DOST) in Bicutan, Taguig. Australian Mathematics Trust
Executive Director Peter J. Taylor, with DOST Undersecretary
Fortuna T. de la Peña, Acting Deputy Head of
Missions of the Australian Embassy Mr. Paul Griffiths,
, and Mathematics Trainers Guild of the Philippines
(MTG) President Dr. Simon L. Chua, , awarded the young
math talents. Aside from the two medallists, four students
received the AMC Special Achievement Awards, nine were
awarded with Certificates of High Distinction, and one
was conferred a Special Award with The Best Standardized
AMC Score. Each of the AMC awardees also received a
Certificate of Recognition from the Science Education
Institute (SEI) of the DOST.
This
year, almost half a million secondary school students
from different countries tested their math skills in
the biggest annual event in Australia. Entries come
from over 364,000 Year 7-12 students from 2,369 Australian
schools and over 96,000 students from 936 overseas schools
in 35 countries, including the Philippines.
The Competition is now celebrating its 25th Year and
continuously provides a meaningful venue for secondary
students to benchmark their mathematical skills with
their international counterparts. The AMC is organized
and implemented by the Australian Mathematics Trust,
an organization based in Canberra and composed of educators
and mathematicians in Australia. The Westpac Banking
Corporation, the University of Canberra and the Canberra
Mathematical Association provide sponsorship to this
international math tilt. In the Philippines, the AMC
is run by the SEI-DOST in cooperation with the Mathematics
Trainers Guild of the Philippines and the Mathematical
Society of the Philippines.
