by Ruby Cristobal, S&T Media Services

Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Estrella F. Alabastro announces the names of successful examinees in the 2002 Science and Technology Scholarship Examination held on 3 February 2002 in 119 test centers all over the country.

Four thousand one hundred eighteen (4,118) examinees qualified under the Science and Technology Scholarship Program or Republic Act 7687 (Formerly Program A) while 333 passed under the DOST-Science Education Institute (SEI) Merit Scholarships (Formerly Program B). The former program awards scholarships in 4-5 year baccalaureate degrees and 3-year technician courses while the latter provides 4-5 year BS scholarships in priority S&T courses.

A total of 22,454 examinees belonging to the top 5% of Batch 2002 high school graduates took the competitive examination.

The S&T Scholarship Programs are part of the DOST-SEI's strategy to identify and nourish talented Filipino youth in science and technology who can be the future front liners of a competent workforce that will bring about more breakthroughs in Philippine S&T. As incentives, the qualifiers will receive school fees; book, transportation and uniform allowances; monthly stipends and group health insurance, among others.

Each qualifier will be notified about the scholarship award and will be advised on the schedule when he/she, with a parent, must report to SEI for NCR qualifiers or the DOST Regional Offices/Provincial Science and Technology Centers for qualifiers in other regions. He/She should bring the following requirements: original and clear photocopy of Birth Certificate and Parents' 2001 Income Tax Return, accompanying parent's 2002 Community Tax Certificate and notarization fee.

Names of potential qualifiers with question on their citizenship or income declaration will be withheld for further evaluation:
