The project entry, entitled, “Development of a Rapid Detection Kit for Amebiasis Patients Through Salivary IgA” of a student from the University of the Philippines-Diliman campus won the best project of the year awards 2007 in the recently concluded closing and awarding ceremonies of the BPI-DOST Science Awards held on January 26, 2007, at BPI head office, Makati City.
The BPI-DOST Best Project of the Year Awards, a joint undertaking of BPI Foundation, Inc. and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) through the Science Education Institute (SEI), is an annual competition among graduating college students in selected colleges/universities which aims to give recognition and incentives to students who excel in specialized fields of science, namely: mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science and biology.
Alexander Edward S. Dy , a senior BS Biology student of the University of the Philippines and the project leader of the group bested other contestants from Ateneo de Manila University, De la Salle University, UPLB and University of Santo Tomas. The best project awardee received a trophy from BPI and P50,000 cash incentive from DOST. The first runner-up Kevin Francis U. Ang of UST received P30,000 cash incentive and a trophy and the second runner-up, Paulo Isagani M. Urriza also of UP-Diliman received P10,000 cash prize from DOST and a trophy from BPI. In addition to cash incentive, the best project awardee is entitled to a P200,000 research grant from DOST subject to DOST research grant policy requirements.
Meanwhile, a recognition program for the youth achievers in the international science & mathematics competitions was held recently at the DOST Executive Lounge. Certificates of recognition were personally awarded by DOST Secretary Estrella F. Alabastro to students who brought home medals and honors from the international science and math competitions, such as; the World Robot Olympiad, the International Rocket Event, Science and Math Olympiad, and the International Young Mathematicians Convention which they have participated in from November to December of 2006. The students come from various schools in Metro Manila and the regions. Project cooperators from the private sector, such as; Felta Multi-Media Inc. and Mathematics Trainers’ Guild or MTG attended the event.
