DOST-SEI Sponsors Web Design Contest for Students

by Ruby Cristobal, S&T Media Service

The 2nd Young Web Designers Awards takes off in a project launching held recently at the Bayview Park Hotel in Manila. The project is a hands-on web design competition open to secondary, and tertiary level students taking up baccalaureate and vocational courses, interested in designing web pages and developing web content based on a given theme. Ten national finalists will be chosen for each category from the preliminary web design submissions, which will revolve around the theme, "IT is in."

High school contestants should not be more than 18 years old, while tertiary level contestants should not be more than 21 years old. The contest is open to Filipino citizens who are in good health and of good moral character. Those interested can log on to www.sei.dost.gov.ph to know more about the contest mechanics and to obtain and submit document requirements. Preliminary entries may be submitted through e-mail at hs@sei.dost.gov.ph, for high school students; and at coll@sei.dost.gov.ph, for college students.

Ten national finalists will be chosen in each category to compete in the final round on 24-25 September 2002 in Cebu City. This will be a hands-on, on-stage web design contest on a theme to be disclosed only during the actual competition. The finalists will be allowed to use web design programs and tools of their choice. The Board of Judges is composed of distinguished professionals in web designing, journalism, education and information and communications technology.

The first prize grand winners will get P100,000 each, while second and third prize winners will take home, P 50,000 and P 25,000, respectively. A consolation prize of P5,000 will also be given to the remaining national finalists.

The Young Web Designers Awards was originally conceived and first implemented in 2000 as a youth project held during the 2000 National Science and Technology Week (NSTW). Back then, the competition was limited to high school students. This year, the project was given a head start in the NSTW celebration and will extend up to September in time for the National Science Club Month celebration.

The Science Education Institute (SEI) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is sponsoring the project with possible sponsorship from leading companies in the IT, banking and media sectors.
