INTRODUCTION
|
The
development of a critical mass of capable science and technology workers
has always been the concern of the Department
of Science and Technology (DOST).
One of its major programs, the Undergraduate
Science and Technology (S&T) Scholarship Program,
implemented since 1958, has been producing quality graduates with
various scholarship projects which cover courses ranging from 2-year
technician courses to five-year baccalaureate degree programs in S&T.
The nation’s longest-running S&T Scholarship Program
has been awarding about 3,500 new scholarship slots per year since
1994 with the implementation of Republic Act 7687, otherwise known
as the S&T Scholarship Act of 1994. The Science
Education Institute (SEI) of
DOST is mandated to implement this program.
However, considering the number of on-going DOST scholars
supported every year, a more efficient management of the scholarship
program is imperative.
The total number of ongoing scholars per year reaches
up to 12,000, thus entailing the demanding task of updating, tracking
and keeping scholars’ records of personal information, academic standing,
scholarship status and financial records. |
