Strengthening Institutional Capabilities

Project Rescue Initiatives for Science Education (RISE)

To substantially increase the number of qualified science and mathematics teachers at the elementary and secondary level, a massive training program is implemented in the Regional Science Teaching Centers (RSTCs) and other selected teacher training institutions in the country. The training is a non-degree program undertaken for a period of 180 hours for the subject area the teacher is to specialize in.

Faculty/Staff Development Program for Teacher Educators of the Regional Science Teaching Centers or RSTCs (Residential Program)

Teacher trainors in selected institutions are offered scholarships for Ph.D. in Science Education. This is to assure adequate quality faculty complement for in-service training programs in science and mathematics education.

Alternative Approach to Faculty Development Program (Distance Education)

An option offered to teacher educators in selected institutions who would like to pursue a doctoral program in science education at the University of the Philippines via distance education mode.

Master's Program for Faculty Members of Selected Teacher Education Institutions

The Institute provides graduate scholarships in science education or other specific science subject areas to teacher educators in selected teacher training institutions particularly those serving the RSTC's.

Mobile Information Technology Classroom

The learning of science and mathematics in school is enhanced through the use of interactive courseware introduced via a user-friendly program implemented using a 32-seater fully-air-conditioned bus equipped with notebook computers and audio-visual facilities with trained teachers as facilitators. The MITC is a project which will address the need to revolutionize the way science is taught through a rationalized sharing of state-of-the–art computer technology.

Various projects were implemented to enhance science learning through the use of IT. To complement the use of the mobile IT bus, comprehensive training are given to selected teachers of the recipient regions. Likewise, local interactive courseware for high school science and mathematics are produced and reproduced for distribution. IT facilities are likewise provided as grant to selected teacher training institutions and S&T-oriented high schools.
