The TIMSS-R (TIMSS-Repeat) was an international study conducted in 1998. It provided data by replicating the TIMSS Mathematics and Science testing at the upper grade of Population 2 (13-year-olds) and provided countries that did not participate in the TIMSS an opportunity to collect internationally comparable mathematics and science achievement data. Like TIMSS, TIMSS-R provided data for determining how Filipino students performed in science and mathematics and how they compared with school children of other countries. More importantly, results of the TIMSS-R gave useful inputs for policy-makers and decision-makers in the development of programs for science and mathematics education.

Participation of the Philippines in TIMSS-R was primarily implemented under the auspices of the DECS, DOST-SEI and UP-NISMED. The three agencies provided the technical, financial and administrative support to implement the study. National Research Coordinators for the Philippines from UP-NISMED and DOST-SEI participated in twice-a-year meetings of national research coordinators of participating countries to plan activities and discuss results and problems.
