In a bid to accelerate the development of innovative teachers across the nation, the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI), in partnership with six universities, trained 250 science and mathematics teacher trainers to prepare them for the implementation of the K-12 curriculum.
Dubbed Science Teacher Academy for the Regions (STAR), the project seeks to provide an organized scheme of innovative trainings in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
DOST-SEI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Bicol University, Central Luzon State University, Mariano Marcos State University, Philippine Normal University, Western Visayas State University, and Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology for the training of 50 in-service science and mathematics teacher trainers per university on the latest innovations in teaching.
IMO vets dominate 17th PMO
27 January 2015
Three of the six members of the national contingent in last year’s International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO)—the most prestigious mathematics competition in the world—topped the recently held 17th Philippine Mathematical Olympiad (PMO).
St. Jude Catholic School’s Adrian Reginald Sy, who won the country’s third silver medal in the 55th IMO held at Cape Town, South Africa in July last year, once again proved his prowess over 19 other finalists in the national tilt. He brought home P20,000 cash prize, a medal and gifts from Sharp Calculators.
Sy was followed by fellow IMO bets Farrell Eldrian Wu of MGC New Life Christian Academy and Kyle Patrick Dulay of Philippine Science High School – Main Campus, who won 1st and 2nd runner-ups, respectively. Both Wu and Dulay took home bronze medals in the IMO as well. Wu received P15,000 cash prize while Dulay got P10,000 along with medals and gifts from Sharp Calculators.
500 college juniors qualify as new DOST-SEI Scholars under RA 10612
01 December 2014
In a bid to beef up the Philippines’ pool of Science and Technology teachers, a total of 500 third year college students passed the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute’s (DOST-SEI) Junior Level Science Scholarship (JLSS) exam administered nationwide on 18 October 2014 to qualify for the 2-3 year S&T scholarships and become future S&T educators.
The JLSS is a scholarship program of the DOST-SEI under the Republic Act (RA) No. 10612, titled “An Act Expanding the Coverage of the Science and Technology (S&T) Scholarship Program and Strengthening the Teaching of Science and Mathematics in Secondary Schools”. Otherwise known as the “Fast-Tracked S&T Scholarship Act of 2013”, this law builds on the current S&T scholarships offered by the DOST-SEI as provided for in RA 7687 or the “Science and Technology Scholarship Act of 1994.”
The implementation of R.A. 10612 supports the execution of Section 8 of the K to 12 law which urges the hiring of teachers from among the graduates of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses.
