St. Jude studes headline 16th PMO winners
Two math wizards from St. Jude Catholic School (SJCS) placed first and second to banner this year’s winners of the Philippine Mathematical Olympiad (PMO).
Matthew Tan emerged as national champion during the Awarding Ceremony of the 16th PMO held at the De la Salle University, Manila. He was followed by fellow SJCS student Adrian Reginald Sy who was a bronze medalist in last year’s International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). Tan and Sy took home P15,000 and P10,000, respectively, as well as medals and trophies. Their coach, Manuel Tanpoco, won a total of P8,000 cash prize for nailing the top two posts.
Finishing third was John Thomas Chuatak of St. Stephen’s High School who won P5,000 a medal and a trophy.
All three winners, along with the 17 other PMO finalists, will get the chance to compete in the 55th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) to be held in Cape Town, South Africa on July 3-13, 2014.
The PMO, the oldest and most challenging mathematics competition in the country, is being organized by the Mathematical Society of the Philippines (MSP) in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI).
Suprises fill 3rd Tagisang Robotics
Pitogo High School, one of the eight new schools in the 3rd Tagisang Robotics: Design, Build and Play Competition, surprised all the 39 schools—veterans and rookies, alike—as they ruled the elimination round with a perfect 6-0 slate, making them not only the Best Rookie Team but also the Best Team. As the Best Rookie Team, they won P50,000 cash prize, P10,000 for their coach, medals for all students and a trophy for their school. They also secured another P100,000 cash prize, P30,000 for their coach, along with a trophy and medals for being the Best Team.
Likewise, the alliance of Benigno Aquino High School—last year’s Best Team Awardee—, Ramon Magsaysay Cubao High School, and Rizal National Science High School won the Final Round with a perfect 2-0 record to be named as the Best Alliance and bring home P150, 000 cash prize, P30,000 for their coaches, medals for students and trophies for their schools.
For the Special Awards, Grace Christian College won the Best Engineering Design Award given by the National Instruments Philippines; La Salle Greenhills won both the Most Popular Robot Award and Most Popular Team Award given by Felta Multimedia, Inc. and Alexan Commercial, respectively; and Pasig City Science High School grabbed the Best Blog Award courtesy of Think Lab.
Pisay Cebu studes to represent PHL to int’l water rocket competition
From Cebu to Bulacan to Vietnam.
Two fourth year students from Philippine Science High School – Central Visayas whizzed their way to Hanoi, Vietnam as they represent the Phillippines in the 20th Asia Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum Water Rocket Competition in November.
Beating 17 other schools in the National Water-boosted Rocket Competition held at Gawad Kalinga Enchanted Farm in Angat, Bulacan, PSHS-Central Visayas students Mary Dorothy Dinampo and Weand Ybanez landed their rocket 2.4 meters away from the target placed 70 meters away from them.
DOST-SEI 2014 Scholarship Exams in Zambo postponed
With the ensuing crisis between government troops and the Moro National Liberation Front, the Department of Science and Technology – Science Education Institute has postponed the 2014 Undergraduate Scholarship Examination in Zamboanga City and nearby provinces.
DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo said the scholarship exam, scheduled on Sunday, September 22, will be postponed in the following areas: Zamboanga City, Zamboanga Sibugay, Dipolog City, Pagadian City, Basilan Province, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.
Montejo said the cities of Dipolog and Pagadian were included based on the recommendation of the DOST IX Regional Office.
